Our History

In 1874 the city of Forney became official when a U.S. Post Office was established and one year later, a pastor was named to the local Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The first permanent structure was located at Church and Austin Streets; a two-story parsonage was built in 1913 and still stands today but is no longer owned by the congregation. By 1926 a grand new structure was erected on the old church site and remained home to the congregation until the 1960s when continual maintenance problems forced the members to tear down the church building and move to the present Broad Street location.

From a small building in 1964 the First United Methodist Church has increased its campus to four buildings with a new children's and youth discipleship building that is close to being finished. In 1999, our church, along with Fellowship Baptist of Forney, purchased land that accesses Highway 80. Our master plan will incorporate much of that land.

Just as the City of Forney languished with little growth for more than a hundred years, so did the First United Methodist Church. Today, however, it is a growing church, both spiritually and physically offering many programs for children, youth, and adults. As former Pastor Arville McLain stated in the Church History 1875-2000 forward , "future generations will forever be in the debt of this and previous generations of faithful families who have made this 'house of God' their beloved home."
